Casimir-Célestin BAILLET (1820-1900), veterinarian and naturalist, at the Alfort veterinary school before becoming director of the Toulouse veterinary school; he carried out extensive herborizations in the Pyrenees and published several works; he also published a Botanique agricole et médicale ou étude des plantes qui intéressent principalement les médecins, les vétérinaires et les agriculteurs (with 160 plants). 6 autograph letters signed to botanist Édouard Timbal-Lagrave (1819-1888), specialist in the flora of the Pyrenees. 24 pp. in-8. Alfort and Conques, 1869-1873. Beautiful correspondence devoted to botany (Pyrenees, Auvergne (Cantal) and Aveyron) and to his scientific activities, particularly at the École d'Alfort. "2° the second, narrower-leaved form is labelled Campunula Linifolio Lam. It is much more widespread. The strongest of the samples I am sending you, which is also the most beautiful I possess, comes from the Neyrat valley at an altitude of around 1000 meters. This valley is at the gateway to Allanche. The soil is volcanic. The disease has not been reported to me, but it is quite rampant in some of the neighboring mountains. This bellflower is more common than the other. I found it in almost all the pastures around Allanche. I've also seen it near Neussargues at an altitude of 800 meters, and in Montgreleix at 1500 meters. This year it was not in flower at the end of June and the beginning of July. You may need to consult Lecoq and Lamotte, and unfortunately I took your catalog with me, which I am using to write my report [...]". He also gives news of his activities at the École vétérinaire d'Alfort. "I went to the Botanical Society, attracted by the desire to see the Emperor of Brazil, with whom I had had lunch a few days earlier at our director's home. There I met Count Jaubert, whom I thanked in a few words, and from whom I asked permission to visit him at home. Permission was granted, and yesterday I made the visit in question. I don't need to tell you that I was received with extreme kindness [...]".
