In 1716, Elector Lothar Franz von Schönborn appointed him court painter at Mainz. Our composition is a replica of a painting seen on the art market, the counterpart of which is Achilles Discovered Among the Daughters of Lycomedes (Anonymous sale, London Philip's, December 6, 1988, lot 75, ill. coul.; Anonymous sale, Paris, Tajan, December 12, 1995, lot 86, ill. coul.). Another autograph version, with a few variations, is preserved in the Serpouhkov Museum of Art and History. In a gilded wood and paste frame, 19th century.
