LOIR-ET-CHER. Léon MASSE, mycologist and pharmacist in Vendô - Lot 177
LOIR-ET-CHER. Léon MASSE, mycologist and pharmacist in Vendôme. 10 autograph letters signed to mycologist Émile Boudier (1828-1920). 14 pp. in-4 and in-8, headed "Pharmacie L. Masse, Vendôme". Vendôme, 1903-1913. Correspondence on mushrooms in the Vendôme region. "[...] I am sending you 3 samples of a russula whose flavor, obviously resinous, is not mentioned anywhere. It seems to M. Peltereau and me to have all the characteristics of the R. Lepida, but the "acerbic" flavor of this species doesn't match the resinous flavor of the one I'm sending you. It has been growing under oak trees for nearly a month now; its foot is often wrinkled and strongly variegated with red; its spores are white. We have just had a fatal poisoning of a resident of our town, newly arrived here and who was guided in his harvests by the plate of edible & poisonous mushrooms given as a bonus to its readers by the Petit Journal. From the inquiry I was able to make of the widow of the unfortunate man, I learned that in the harvest she prepared were 4 mushrooms not resembling the others [...]". He concludes that he ate an Amanite Phalloïde, etc.
