Joseph Pitton de TOURNEFORT (Aix-en-Provence 1656-1708), bot - Lot 127
Joseph Pitton de TOURNEFORT (Aix-en-Provence 1656-1708), botanist and traveler, the greatest botanist of the 17th century, precursor of Linné. Autograph manuscript, titled "Portugal", 2 pp. in-8. Central stain. Preserved in an old "Tournefort (Pitton de)" folder. It was in 1689 that Tournefort, after crossing the whole of Spain via Madrid, Granada, Seville, Cadiz and Gibraltar, went to Portugal, to Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto and Braga, where he made extensive studies of the local flora. Tournefort's manuscript, entitled "Portugal", contains notes in Latin and French on the country's flora. "Chamarhorendros pontica Lauro cerasi filio grows at Monchique in the Algarves among chestnut and heather - Laurus Regia in almost all the gardens of Lisbon - The cedar of Bouraco a day's drive from Lisbon - chés les carmes réformés [long list of plants in Latin] - Dans les jardins de la ville jasminus brasilicum tirfolium [...]". The entire second page is written in Latin: a list of plants, ending with this indication "between the cape and Sagres in the steep rocks". Attached is a plate from the Bordère herbarium, containing a dried specimen of Senecio Tournefortii, collected in July 1870 on the Somâoute peak (Hautes-Pyrénées). Extremely rare.
