Ernest MALINVAUD (Paris 1836-1913), botanist, devoted himsel - Lot 44
Ernest MALINVAUD (Paris 1836-1913), botanist, devoted himself to the Société Botanique de France, of which he was secretary general and then president; his herbarium and archives are preserved at the Muséum de Paris. 24 autograph letters signed to botanist Édouard Timbal-Lagrave (1819-1888), Toulouse. 81 pp. in-8, some headings from the Société Botanique de France. Paris, 1874-1883. A long and formidable correspondence devoted entirely to botany, and in particular to mints. Let's quote the 1st page of the 1st letter, which gives an idea of the whole. "Sir and most honored colleague, here we are for this year at the end of the battle, I mean that the militant period of herborizations is over (at least for phanerogamous plants, especially for mints), we must put away the box and its accessories, and realize the gain of the campaign. I brought back a satisfactory haul from three weeks spent in Provins, devoted exclusively to the search for mints, prepared in numerous samples for rariores. I was fortunate enough to discover a fine station of the rare Mentha schulzii (aquatico rotuadif). I also dried abundantly M. Micrantha F. Sch, M. Scotdiastrum F. Sch. [...], in short I prepared 20 to 22 different species or varieties in 60 suitable parts each. My correspondents have begun to send me their respective contributions: Mr. Ed. Lamy, from Limoges, in particular, has sent me two enormous parcels containing thousands of samples of numerous species, some of them very valuable, some of them even new to me. M. Agrestis sole is included in two interesting forms, M. Longifolia palustric, etc., etc. Mr. Legrand of Montbrison has dried a fine hundred Rotundifolio sylvestris and has sent me (and Mr. H.B. of Saint-Etienne) a series of test specimens, among which I have designated for next year the most remarkable forms of this region, which they are willing to procure for me successively. I have mentha citrata from Moselle, M. Pubescens from Prussia Rhineland; Mr. Schultz is due to send me a dozen dried mints (Wohhverthianes multiriana mollis, etc.), which are special to Wissembourg etc., in the next few days. In a word, I have about fifty issues of my herbarium which will be published next January [...]".
