Léo LESQUEREUX (Fleurier 1806-1889), Swiss-American paleobot - Lot 35
Léo LESQUEREUX (Fleurier 1806-1889), Swiss-American paleobotanist; he settled in Boston in 1848 and worked with Louis Agassiz; he is notably the author of Description of the Coal Flora of the Carboniferous Formation in Pennsylvania and Throughout the United States. 2 autograph letters signed to "monsieur et très honoré confrère". 3 pp. in-8. Columbus, Ohio, 1875-1888. Rare letters. Received his letter and prospectus announcing his botanical publications. "Forced as I am now to give all my time to plant paleontology, it would be impossible for me to get samples of mosses out of my collections for exchange. I have a lot of them, especially species from California, and in order to take advantage of them, I will send them, I believe, to my excellent friend W. P. Schrimper in Strasbourg. He will be able to distribute them. Two editions of Musci Exsiccati Americani published by Sullivaut & Lesquereux are long out of print. There were only 100 copies. Your two publications, Histoire des Champignons and Histoire des Lichens, would be very useful to me. For his part, he can offer him paleontological works (the Flore du crétacé de l'ouest, for example). "I can send you by post the pamphlet separate edition of the labels of Musci Exsiccati with descriptions of new species. It will give you an idea of our botanical or rather bryological flora. The synopsis of our American mosses is in the works. But it will be another year before I can finish it [...]". Attached is a leaf from his herbarium containing 2 samples of plants collected in 1851 in Brazil (Rio de la Plata) and "montagnes blanches amer Boreal".
