William Allport LEIGHTON (1805-1889), British botanist, lich - Lot 32
William Allport LEIGHTON (1805-1889), British botanist, lichen specialist and fellow student of Charles Darwin at Schrewsbury, author of Lichen Flora of Great Britain and a series of exsiccata Lichenes Britannici exsiccati; his herbarium is kept at Kew gardens. 5 autograph letters signed to "my dear sir" [possibly the Toulouse botanist Casimir Roumeguère (1828-1892), these letters being kept in a folder entitled "Cabinet C. Roumeguère - lettres autographes"]. 4 pp. in-4 and 8 pp. in-8. Schrewsbury, 1854-1871. In English. Beautiful botanical correspondence. The first letter is followed by a long list of desiderata (on 2 pp. in-4). "The box containing your invaluable collection of lichens came safely to hand a few days ago, and I lose no time in offering you my very cordial and sincere thanks for the same. It is without exaggeration the most beautiful collection I have ever seen and will prove a valuable addition to my herbarium. The addition of the figures of the sporidia renders it admirably complete and of great assistance in scientific research and comparison. As a return of this estimable present I have this day fowarded a box to you address to the care of Mess. Droz & Bonani Paris containing a set of my Lich. Brit. Exsic. - the 5th fasciculus of which is just published - and also a copy of my Monograph on the Brotish Graphideae just published. As I trust that this will be the prelude to many echanges between us of lichens, I have taken the liberty of sending the other half a list of my desiderata in certain genera in which I am on present time much interested [...]". Enclosed: - a leaflet from the Leighton herbarium with a sample of a plant collected in 1835. - a prospectus for the second edition of The Lichen-Flora of Great Britain.
