Louis KRALIK (Strasbourg 1813-1892), botanist, curator of th - Lot 29
Louis KRALIK (Strasbourg 1813-1892), botanist, curator of the Webb collection and then of the Ernest Cosson collection; he explored Egypt and Nubia and was entrusted with a botanical exploration mission of Corsica. 9 autograph letters signed to botanist Gaetano Durando (1811-1892), Algiers. 18 pp. in-8 and in-12. Paris and Tresserve, 1847-1876. Envelopes glued to the back of some letters. Beautiful correspondence mainly devoted to the harvesting, purchase and exchange of plants (particularly from Tuscany). He also mentions numerous botanist friends (Moquin-Tandon, Tulasne, Brongniart, Jussieu, Mirbel, etc.) and his work with the great British botanist Philip Barker Webb (in Tunisia and France). "I've been with the excellent Mr Webb for a year now; I don't need to tell you that I'm happy and satisfied with my position and my relations with him [...]. Mr de Jussieu has been unwell all summer and his constitution seems to be seriously affected. Messrs Brongniart, Decaisne, Gay [...] are all doing wonderfully well. Messrs Puel and Maille are continuing the publication of their herbarium of local flora, and have concurrently begun that of European flora, which is, I believe, in its 3rd decade. Balansa has provided them with several interesting plants for this publication. Their herbarium of local flora has inaugurated its second century. Your letter reached me after Mr. Webb's departure, otherwise I would have told him about your collections. But there aren't too many plants from Africa for us not to take some collections; but always send me one of your catalogs, in case Mr. Webb wants to choose. We usually receive all Balansa's collections [botanist and explorer Benjamin Balansa (1825-1891) [...]". Enclosed: - a long printed list of plants, annotated by Durando: "Index plantarum in Etruria sponte nascentium" with mention of "species given in exchange to the friend Kralik in September 1848. - 3 manuscripts in Gaetano Durando's hand: "Plantes données en échange à mon ami Mr Kralik Paris 30 août 1848", "Mémorandum" and "Espèces au nombre de 10 échantillons, récoltées en Toscane, et offerts à l'ami Kralik en échange de autant de plantes de France. Paris, November 10, 1849". 3 pp. in-4 and 1 p. in-8.
