Charles GRENIER (Besançon 1808-1875), botanist, Professor of - Lot 24
Charles GRENIER (Besançon 1808-1875), botanist, Professor of Botany at the Besançon Faculty of Science, author of phytogeographical works on the Doubs and Jura regions, co-editor with Dominique Godron of La Flore de France (published from 1847 to 1856); he bequeathed his herbarium to the Paris Museum. He is credited with the discovery of 500 plants. 12 autograph letters signed to botanist Louis Questier (1810-1879), parish priest of Thury-en-Valois. 22 pp. in-8. Besançon, 1854-1862. Addresses on back with stamps. Beautiful correspondence entirely devoted to Rubus, of which Abbé Questier is also a great specialist. "I read with great interest your dissertation on some of our Rubus, and particularly on the Rubus I sent to M. Le Normand in 1842 under the name R. affinis. At that time, I was not very sure about the determination of Rubus; I was even making my first attempts on this genus. So I must have made a lot of mistakes, and certainly the determination you're talking about is one of them, because I haven't come across any R. affinis around Besançon so far. I say that there are no affinis here, and that in a very broad sense, for I have neither Billot's, Godron's nor Robington's, which as you say are very close to R. nitidus; the latter being according to Fries the true R. fraticones L. [...]". Enclosed are 2 drafts of Abbé Questier's reply (4 pp. in-4).
