[ALGERIA]. A. LUCAS, botanist and officer in Algeria; he was a staff captain; he joined Gaetano Durando's research on the flora around Algiers; in 1867, he explored the southern part of the high plateaus between Djelfa and Laghouat. 9 autograph letters signed to botanist Gaetano Durando (1811-1892), Algiers. 10 pp. in-8, headed "Armée d'Algérie - État-major général". Algiers, Djelfa and Laghouat, 1865-1870. With a visiting card. Correspondence on the flora of Algeria, accompanied by a handwritten map by Lucas (19 x 19 cm, irregular edges and small holes: signed note by Durando underneath "fait et donné par mons. Lucas capitaine d'État-major, Alger 1868. Durando"). Some replied that they called it Yed En-Nebi (the hand of the Prophet), others Akbeur men Bouch-asrar men Khouh (taller than his father, shorter than his brother) [Arabic inscription]. I believe, however, that the latter name applies more to the Marguerite de Jéricho. The natives here confuse the latter name with the former [...]".
