Hippolyte-François, comte JAUBERT (1798-1874), botanist and - Lot 431
Hippolyte-François, comte JAUBERT (1798-1874), botanist and founder of the Société Botanique de France, member of the Académie des sciences. Set of 6 documents: 4 L.S., 1 L.A.S. and 1 P.S. Five of the documents are addressed to Dominique-Alexandre GODRON, botanist, geologist, archaeologist and speleologist from Moselle (1807-1880), then Dean of the Nancy Faculty of Science. 1822 and 1858-1862. 12 pp. of various sizes. About various species of Rosaceae: "While going over my Rosaceae these days, I recognized gaps in the very difficult Rubus genus, which your kindness will no doubt enable me to fill. It calls for the following species: Rubus serpens Godroni, rudis pil[?] stachys and affinis. He received a sample of Erigeron acre with a whitish egret, and compared it with his "single sample from the Col de Voza (Savoie), and I notice that the latter, which is rowdier, has even whiter egrets than yours; the leaves are also broader, and overall my plant is more similar to E. Drobachiense, Fl Danica, 874, but these are slight differences which, as you have shown, must fall within the specific framework of Erigeron acre [...]". He calls on "learned colleagues from Lorraine and Alsace" to hold an extraordinary session of the French Botanical Society in Strasbourg. The reputation of its scientific studies and its proximity to the Vosges mountains and the Black Forest "make it a very interesting center for botanical excursions", as "the herborization [...] of the mountains seems to us to be one of the essential aims of the session [...]". A pass for the extraordinary session of the Société botanique de la société botanique de France signed by Jaubert in Meurthe et Moselle. A signed autograph youth letter from Jaubert to Salvandy, dated April 5, 1822. 2 pp. in-4. Fine watermarks with profile and cipher of Empress Marie-Louise.
