SARTHE. Hector LÉVEILLÉ (Le Mans 1864-1918), botanist and pr - Lot 358
SARTHE. Hector LÉVEILLÉ (Le Mans 1864-1918), botanist and prelate, member of the Missions étrangères; after several years in India, he returned to Le Mans and founded Le Monde des Plantes and the Académie Internationale de Géographie Botanique; he undertook the study of the 35,000 specimens bequeathed to the Académie by the missionaries of the Far East and described more than 2,000 new species from China and Korea; his very rich herbarium was acquired by George Forrest, collector in Yunnan. 33 letters and cards addressed to mycologist Émile Boudier (1828-1920). 33 pp. in-4 (sometimes partly printed) and in-8. Le Mans, 1894-1914. He sends him mushrooms, which he describes so that he can determine them or confirm their identity, particularly from the Sarthe (often in the Perseigne forest), but also from exotic lands. "[...] I found a second locality of the same mushroom, amanita strabiliformis Votta de Livet, 1 kilometer from the previous one on the small road to Louvigny, not far from the Tuilerie [...]. I'm just leaving for Lourdes on the national pilgrimage. On the way back, I'll make a short stay in the Vendée and return to Livet and the Perseigne forest [...]". He also mentions the activities of the International Academy of Botanical Geography. A draft of Boudier's reply is attached (2 pp. in-8).
