EURE-ET-LOIR. Abbé Pierre DAENEN (Muenster, Switzerland 1788 - Lot 263
EURE-ET-LOIR. Abbé Pierre DAENEN (Muenster, Switzerland 1788-1863), botanist in Dreux, member of the Société Botanique de France, chaplain to the royal chapel in Dreux; he published Herbier médical ou les plantes appliquées à la médecine (1852). 5 autograph letters signed to botanist and mycologist Louis Questier (1810-1879), parish priest of Thury-en-Valois. 13 pp. in-8 and 3 pp. in-folio. Dreux, 1845-1850. Correspondence devoted to botany (one letter accompanied by a long list of plants). "I received your letter of February 7th, which gave me great pleasure, because it introduces me to a new Botanist colleague. If I didn't write to you earlier, it's because I had 2 departmental herbariums to finish, those of Eure-et-Loir and Eure, for which I have paid tribute to the towns of Dreux and Évreux". He describes his herbarium "classified according to Duby", draws up a "catalog of phanerogamous plants" available to him, invites him to herborize in the Dreux forest, talks of the pleasure he takes in exploring nature in isolation, evokes the "terrible catastrophe" that was the 1848 Revolution and the advent of the Republic, which led to repression against religious institutions: "[...] we are still in the chapel where we are allowed to say low masses with exclusion of the public, i.e. the chapel closed, and all public worship rigorously forbidden, for fear no doubt of awakening the dead [...]". Attached is a leaf from his herbarium, with a plant sample (collected in Dreux in 1851).
