CORSICA. Odon DEBEAUX (Agen 1826-1910), botanist, explorer a - Lot 252
CORSICA. Odon DEBEAUX (Agen 1826-1910), botanist, explorer and military pharmacist, he made several botanical explorations in Algeria and China. 4 autograph letters signed to botanist Édouard Timbal-Lagrave (1819-1888), Toulouse. 10 pp. in-8. Bastia and Agen, 1867-1869. Odon Debeaux spent four years in Corsica and published several booklets on Corsican plants, shells and algae (Diagnose d'une espèce nouvelle d'Hélix de l'île de Corse, Énumération des algues marines de Bastia, etc.). "We have several species of Phragmites in Corsica, and certainly some new species. The Phragmite gigantea grows abundantly on the shores of the Biguglia salt pond, and with it another pale yellow feathered Phragmites that I had initially mistaken for a Fladeceux. But it's not him, nor any other variety of Ph. communis. First of all, it blooms two months later, has a completely different habit and a tridentate glume. Professor Mabille, who is currently working on a monograph on the Phragmites of Corsica, calls it Ph. corsicus or insularis. He specifies it perfectly, but he doesn't know whether it refers to Phragmites splendeus, which you wrote about a few years ago. Please compare the epissets of Phrag. corsicus with those of Ph. splendeus and see if there are any connections. In the submerged areas of the Biguglia pond, this Phrag. reaches a height of 3 to 4 meters. Its leaves are broad and flat, similar to those of arundo donax, and not curled as in Ph. pumila from southern Spain [...]". "I have just completed my distributions of Corsican plants, as well as the booklet intended for you [...]".
