Auguste, baron DEJEAN (1780-1841), entomologist and officer, - Lot 44
Auguste, baron DEJEAN (1780-1841), entomologist and officer, son of Napoleon's general, he was himself an Empire general and fought at Waterloo. A great specialist in beetles, he built up the largest private collection ever assembled, with 22,000 species. 4 autograph letters signed to M. Vésuty, his former aide-de-camp. 8 ½ pp. in-4. Paris, 1818-1830. Addresses on back. Defects to some letters. He recounts his life as an exile, his travels through Central Europe, and his passion for entomology. "I spent all my time waging war on insects, and I brought back an immensity of them, over thirty-six thousand [his insect collection was the most complete of his time]. You know that I've had this passion since I was a child, and now that I have nothing essential to do, I'm going to devote myself entirely to it, in order to try and get into the Institute some day. By the way, if there should happen to be an insect enthusiast in your vicinity, please give him my name [...]". He talks about his family, his political ambitions, the state of the country, his father's death, the July Revolution and so on.
