Joseph DECAISNE (1807-1882), botanist, professor at the Musé - Lot 43
Joseph DECAISNE (1807-1882), botanist, professor at the Muséum, president of the Société Botanique de France. 19 autograph letters signed to botanist Gaetano Durando (1811-1892), Algiers. 43 pp. in-8, Muséum letterheads. Paris, 1851-1875. A few stamped envelopes glued to the backs of blank sheets. Long correspondence devoted entirely to the collection of plants in Algeria for the Muséum. It is accompanied by 11 manuscripts in Durando's hand (32 pp. in-4 and in-folio): lists of all plants requested and sent to the Muséum, from 1851 to 1876. The first letter gives a good idea of the whole. "My dear Mr. Durando, I received your kind letter of March 23, as well as the supplement, the seeds of Linum grandiflorum & I will announce in the Annales your ol. alger. exsire. as you wish and we will try to give all publicity to the Flora atlantica. If you could, along the way, collect seeds from the plants whose names I am passing on to you, you would please me, as the Garden lacks them. You would give this collection the price you consider appropriate. I'm sure I'd have nothing to bargain with. Only it would be a good idea to send me a slightly larger bag than the one you kindly sent me in a letter. You can judge their size by the volume of the seeds themselves. I hope you will be able to send me a good supply of Linum this year. The plant is very common in the province you live in, and I particularly recommend it. In addition, he lists 118 "seeds, bulbs or living plants missing from the Museum". Durando copies the lists of plants and seeds requested by Decaisne, checking them off and crossing them out. Enclosed are 3 letters from Albert Gouault, head gardener at the Muséum, on behalf of Joseph Decaisne, on the same subject (6 pp. in-8, Muséum letterheads, stamped envelopes, 1874-1876) + a 300-franc money order for plants to be sent to the Muséum.
