Pierre CUSSON (Montpellier 1727-1783), botanist specializing - Lot 40
Pierre CUSSON (Montpellier 1727-1783), botanist specializing in umbellifers, herborized in Majorca, Spain and the Pyrenees. Autograph letter signed to Strasbourg naturalist Jean Hermann (1738-1800). 5 pp. ½ in-4. Montpellier, October 17, 1775. Address on back. Long, superb letter illustrated with a ½-page ink drawing of a plant, written after receiving a magnificent herbarium of umbellifers. He acknowledges receipt of his box of umbellifers, which also contained various theses. In return, he prepares a shipment for her. "Let's come to your fascicule of dried umbellifers. I've seen nothing better prepared and better kept; without question, it's the most elegant umbelliferous folder I've examined. If I were to send you my own, I would be ashamed; Mr Gouan's, which is just like it, and Mr de la Tourrette's, although beautiful, have neither the magnificence nor the beauty of the samples in yours, and I can assure you that they do not perhaps contain more umbelliferous plants than yours; you have the number that one usually has, when one has no more predilection for this class than for any other [...]. As soon as in your 1st letter you spoke to me of large and beautiful specimens, I felt that they would serve me considerably to perfect the description of a certain number of species, and I guessed: I found several rare specimens in much better condition than mine. I have even found, and this is enough, one and even two species that I do not know and which, therefore, interest me a great deal [...]". He comments at length on his various plants and the differences between them and his own specimens, discusses the classification and nomenclature of Umbelliferae species, requests further specimens and seeds, and so on.
