Louis Alphonse de BREBISSON (Falaise 1798-1872), botanist, f - Lot 26
Louis Alphonse de BREBISSON (Falaise 1798-1872), botanist, famous for his Flore de la Normandie; he was also a pioneer of photography. 2 autograph letters signed to botanist Gaetano Durando (1811-1892). 7 pp. in-8, crowned embossed letterhead. Falaise and Carel near Saint-Pierre sur Dives, May - June 1848. Envelopes glued to verso. "Please excuse me if I haven't answered you sooner, but I was in Trouville doing a herborization to collect Sagina stricta, Violatricolor v. nana, Cerastium tatradrum, etc.", he happily accepts her offer of exchanges and, on his list, indicates the species he would like to procure. 3please rest assured that I will do my utmost to offer you a collection of mosses from France that is interesting enough, without having to worry about the numerical accuracy of the balance of trade. I consider the drying of mosses to be easier than that of phanerogams, so I will give you more species than you send me. I could also include some liverworts from Normandy, of which I have a fairly good series. I would also have many marine and freshwater algae at your disposal. Many of the latter have been discovered by me, and I have made a special study of them [...]". In the second letter, he also refers to Fourier's doctrines, of which Durando is a follower. Attached is Durando's "Index Plantarum" (4 pp. folio printout containing Durando's list of proposed plants), entirely annotated by him with "species sent to M. de Brébisson, Professor of Botany at Falaise", dated and signed June 9, 1848.
