[Aimé BONPLAND]. Auguste DEJEAN (1780-1841), entomologist, son of Napoleon's general, was himself an Empire general and fought at Waterloo. A great specialist in beetles, he built up the largest private collection ever assembled, with 22,000 species. Autograph letter signed to botanist Alire Raffeneau-Delile (1778-1850), 1 p. ½ in-4. Buenos-Aires, August 17, 1833. Full transcript attached. News from Aimé Bonpland. "I have come to fulfill with you the promise I made to you concerning M. Bonpland. When I arrived in B. y. s. [Buenos-Ayres], it had been ten months since he had left to form a settlement near Paraguay, where I heard he had said he intended to end his days. His wife's whereabouts have been unknown since she came to request his release, and I have been unable to obtain any further information from her. He asked Roquin, a close friend of Bonpland, to write to him. "I sent Mr. B. the letters and seeds you asked me to give him, and at the same time I asked him to do me the pleasure of sending me a small herbarium to give to you; I think he will do so, and I will enclose it with the one I will prepare for you myself". It has been impossible to send him everything he asked for via the Louise, due to the bad weather since his arrival in Argentina, but he has not forgotten him.
