Jean-Pierre BOISGIRAUD (Gémozac 1793-1879), chemist and phys - Lot 11
Jean-Pierre BOISGIRAUD (Gémozac 1793-1879), chemist and physicist, Dean of the Toulouse Faculty of Science. 6 autograph letters signed to botanist and zoologist Nicolas Joly (1812-1885), Toulouse. 16 pp; in-8 and 2 pp. in-4, one on the letterhead of the Dean of the Toulouse Faculty of Science. Toulouse, Luchon, Paris and Montplaisir, 1840-1842. Addresses on the back. He announces his appointment to the Faculty of Toulouse, detailing the program. During a visit to Paris for a session at the Académie des Sciences, he tells him about discussions with other eminent scientists on the subject of Nicolas Joly's dissertation; he holds numerous meetings in order to have it approved and printed in the Annales de Chimie. "I saw MM. Pouillet and Regnault at Monday's session at the Institut, while M. Gay-Lussac was absent [...]. He seemed to me to have some definite ideas on the cleaning of mercury and on the breaking of the camphor cone by the friction of water under the action of evaporation; moreover, he is willing to make the report [...]. As Messrs Pelouze and Dumas are not in Paris, I have contacted Mr Regnault for printing in the Annales [...]. Mr. Thénard is very well disposed in your favor [...]. I have just seen M. Guérin-Menneville, with whom I am pleased, whatever one may say in this unfortunate country of hatred, jealousy and speculative charlatanism. He has promised me a work on lymnadiers [lymnaeidae], which I will send you with this letter if it arrives this morning. This work is taken from the Revue Zoologique. If you were intending to give an extract of your work on the isaura to the public, by presenting the memoir to the Institute, which is generally done, Mr Guérin would print this extract in his journal. I am detained here to my great displeasure by Mr. Thénard's obligation to see the Minister about the buildings of our faculties [...]". He reports on an excursion to the Pic "known as the brutal", where he went on a "hunting expedition". "I caught 14 carabus pyreneus, an innumerable quantity of Zabrus obesus, feronia abanoïdes, nebria lafrenayi, and so on. I have 25 splendors and several pretty and rare species such as callistus lunatus, feronia dufourier, etc. [...]". [...] " Attached is the draft of a reply from Nicolas Joly (1 p. ½ in-4).
