Jacques BARRELIER (Paris 1606-1673), botanist and Dominican - Lot 6
Jacques BARRELIER (Paris 1606-1673), botanist and Dominican scholar, spent 23 years in Rome, where he created a botanical garden. During his stay there, he worked on his Hortus Mundi or Orbis botanicus, in which he described the species he had collected during his travels. Antoine de Jussieu published the fruits of his 30 years of botanical research in 1714, under the title Plantae per Galliam, Hispaniam et Italiam observatae, iconibus aeneis exhibitae a R. P. Jacobo Barreliero. Autograph manuscript "In Palestina Planta desiderata", in Latin, 1 p. in-folio (attractive watermark). Old identification in ink on the margin: "Barrelier manuscript". Very rare manuscript in Barrelier's hand (a fire destroyed all his notes). Latin list of 35 sought-after plants from Palestine and Judea: "Calamus arsmaticus juxta La. Gennezareth / Cyprus arbor flore Cinere in Asialone Judea [...]".
