Henri BAILLON (1827-1895), botanist, author of a large numbe - Lot 5
Henri BAILLON (1827-1895), botanist, author of a large number of monographs, director of the Botanical Garden at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. Autograph manuscript, 7 pp. in-8, [ca. 1860]. Information on Mexican plants, intended for harvesting during an expedition to the country, in 20 points. "2° Mexican orchids. Collect and send to France the epiphytic species, mainly those that grow far enough north, or at a high enough altitude, for them to be cultivated here in temperate greenhouses. To send them, the pseudobulbs must be picked, placed in slightly dried crates, and surrounded either with very dry moss, or with sawdust or bran [...]". The manuscript is followed by "General remarks on plant harvesting". "1° It is more important to collect all the plants, whatever they may be, from a single locality, such as Puebla and its surroundings, than to have many plants from different provinces. Try to have everything that grows around a given town, in the form of dry samples, with an indication of the altitudes, more or less, and the time of flowering. 2° All seeds, bulbs, pseudo-bulbs, tubers, etc. must be sent dry, in crates or compartments [...]". On the back, in another hand: "Renseignements et desideratas pour le Mexique. Manuscrit de M. Baillon, professeur à la Faculté de Médecine". Probably intended for harvesting during the Mexican Expedition (1861-1867). Attached is a signed autograph letter (1 p. in-8, letterhead of the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Medicine of Paris, 1884).
