Louis-Marie AUBERT DU PETIT-THOUARS (1758-1831), botanist, p - Lot 2
Louis-Marie AUBERT DU PETIT-THOUARS (1758-1831), botanist, part of Bory de Saint-Vincent's voyage of scientific exploration, spent 10 years herorizing on Isle de France and Madagascar. Autograph manuscript, 4 pp. in-4, early 19th century. "Observations sur quelques plantes adressées à la Société philomatique par Mr Batard professeur de Botanique à Angers, département de Maine et Loire (Anjou)". "Mr. Correa and I have been asked by the Philomatic Society to examine a package of plants sent from Angers by Mr. Batard, with an invitation to examine them. He lists 34 plants. "Several of these plants are worthy of comment. 1° Cerastium arvense var trigynum n°4 is indeed a cerastium and not at all Stellania [...]. However, Mr Batard's plant has 3 styles and a capsule that opens into six parts at the top; two characters that are peculiar to the genus Stellaria. Nevertheless, 1° as they are found in Cerastium anomalum, 2° as the number of styles in the stamen capsule divisions is highly variable in the genus Cerastium, although constant in each species, and 3° as Mr Batard's plant resembles C. arvense entirely, we think it can be made a new species close to Cer. Arvense [...]. All the other plants seemed to us to be perfectly named. Some of them deserve to be singled out, such as 1° Sentellana hastifolée L., very rare in France [...]".
