François MITTERRAND (1916-1996). Autograph letter signed to Marie-Louise Terrasse, known as Catherine Langeais. 1 p. in-4. [Fort d'Ivry]. December 2, 1938. Mitterrand exhausted by his military service. "My delightful, Tonight my limbs are broken: a 20km march at full speed, and relentless exercise. The body wanders in a field bathed in fatigue where annihilation sails, but the spirit still holds the body, fatigue serves it intoxication. My beloved, I've been thinking about you all day. I've already included yesterday evening in the memories to be preserved and relived. It augurs well for the hours of intimacy we'll have every evening of our lives: our love becomes more and more identified with our lives, giving them meaning. My little girl, I'm writing to you lying down. I'm falling terribly asleep. Rarely have I needed rest more. But telling you of my love does not thwart this need, this desire for peace. My beloved, I'll stop here. I just wanted to tell you that I love you. François. See you tomorrow evening, darling. Make sure you have a good time the day after tomorrow. Good evening, my darling Zou. Fr." Marie-Louise Terrasse, known as Catherine Langeais (1923-1998), met François Mitterrand at the École normale supérieure ball on January 28, 1938, and became engaged to him at the age of just 15. Mitterrand wrote over 300 letters to the woman he nicknamed Zou.
