CUPBEARER OF THE KING. Manuscript of 24 pp. in-folio. 1612. Diary of the purchase of victuals for the count de Marans, grand cupbearer of France [René du Bueil, count of Sancerre and Marans (1585-1640)]. "Estat de la despence par moi faicte despuis le séjour de monsieur le comte de Marans, en ceste ville à commancer du dimanche xxiiiime apvril mil six cens et onze jusqu'au second jour de novembre ensuivant et despuis led led. second de novembre que monseigneur est arrivé en ceste ville jusqu'au dimanche quatriesme mars mil six cens et douze quil seron parti de ceste ville ". A long list with figures for the purchase of all kinds of victuals (more than 500 lines): frogs, "pijonneaux", "huict oranges", "carpes de Loyre", "saulmon", pikes, capons, "river birds", "quarteron haran blanc", rabbits, "coqs d'Inde", larks, "eleven bécaces, three bécacines, three merles and a river hen", etc. Also food for the dogs, kitchen utensils, incidental expenses ("paid to poor musicians by the order of my lord") and some travel expenses to neighboring towns for supplies (pond of Boisgibault, Cosne, La Charité, Vailly, Bourges, Chateauvieux, Crézancy, etc.). The town mentioned is probably Sancerre, the du Bueil being also counts of Sancerre.
