LOUIS XIV. Letter signed (autograph signature)... - Lot 258 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
LOUIS XIV. Letter signed (autograph signature) to "my aunt" [perhaps Christine of France duchess of Savoy]. 1 p. in-4. Paris, December 31, 1662. A touching letter about the death of his eldest daughter, Anne-Elisabeth of France, born on November 18, 1662, and died of a fluxion of the chest, the day before this letter, on December 30 of the same year. Louis XIV was very affected. It was the first of a long series of bereavements. "My aunt, we have just made a loss of which I do not doubt that you are terribly touched. It is of my daughter who died at two o'clock in the morning of a suffocating catarrh [...]. Even though her young age and the illness she received the day before are considerations capable of diminishing our regrets, I must admit that this blow is hard on me. God will send us, if he pleases, the solid consolations that we must expect from him and for myself I would always have a very great consolation in knowing that you are in good health, and I beg him to keep you there and to have my aunt in his care.
