Jean-Baptiste GUIGNET (Autun 1810-1857), painter of portraits and history, student of Regnault, 2nd great prize of Rome (1836), 1st class medal (1842), he exhibited at the Salon from 1831; he was the elder brother of the orientalist painter Adrien Guignet (Annecy 1816-1854) Important archive of more than 120 letters. Many of them are addressed to him in Madrid during his 3 years stay in the Spanish capital. Envelopes preserved. - 32 L.A.S. to his wife. Madrid, 1853-1855. 155 pp. in-4 and in-8 very filled. Voluminous correspondence written during his stay in Spain. - 97 letters addressed to him by his family, his friends, his acquaintances. Also included are interesting letters from the commissioners of his paintings, and 2 letters from his brother, the orientalist painter Adrien Guignet (+ 2 addressed to him by an art dealer and by the painter Merry-Joseph Blondel, whose student he was). About forty letters and documents received by his wife, who ran a boarding house in Gap, and to his mother are enclosed. As well as 2 notes: "Titian in Spain" (5 pp.) and "Private galleries" (1 p. mentioning the coordinates of the main Spanish collectors)
