VAL-DE-MARNE. Charlotte-Marguerite-Elisabeth de BOURBON-CONDÉ (1754-1839), countess of Löwendal, legitimated natural daughter of the count of Charolais. Autograph letter signed to M. Guillaumot, architect of the King in Versailles. 3 pp. ½ in-8. July 9, 1785. Landslides in the underground of the castle of Saint-Maur (a vast and magnificent renaissance castle now entirely destroyed). The prince of Condé having authorized her to live in "the small castle of St Maur called the small Bourbon", which is built on old quarries, she is alarmed by the noises of landslides she has heard on several occasions. "This winter, gathered in family around our fire, we felt a redoubled tremor which alarmed us. Nothing happened then, but an accident has just occurred in one of the courtyards of the Petit Bourbon, very close to my bedroom, which revives all my alarms. A considerable excavation has been made, the workmen ordered to provide for it have dug and have found vaults which indicate old cellars [...]. They found at the bottom of this excavation an opening of a quarry, and as on the opposite side of the building I have cellars in which is a door of a quarry that I had plugged, it is very apparent that these quarries communicate by under our housing [...] ".
