PAS-DE-CALAIS. Ed. Rousselle, organist and organ historian, author of De l'orgue en général et des orgues de Saint-Pierre d'Aire en particulier. Autograph letter signed, 2 pp. in-4. Rouen, October 27, 1891. Interesting letter on the organ of Saint-Pierre d'Aire. "The organ of Aire was built in 1633 by the religious of Clairmarais near St Omer, who sculpted its magnificent case. But during the Revolution, the monastery was destroyed, the furniture sold and the organ bought and transported to the collegiate church of St. Peter. In 1840, a first restoration was carried out by the firm of Doublanne et Collinet. "A pump blower powered by a hand lever, a 30-note recital of five expressive stops were made. And in 1870 I succeeded in obtaining its last restoration which was carried out by a very talented organ builder, Arnold Heidemach, who died recently in St Omer [...]". He then details the work that has been done on the organ, with its price, and concludes: "I am a choirmaster in St Omer. My choir organ is by Schescher, the organ builder from Rouen. The great organ (32 feet) 64 stops of Cavaillé-Coll. 80.000 fr of restoration last year [...] ".
