NORTH. Duke of CHOISEUL. Letter signed (claw)... - Lot 173 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
NORTH. Duke of CHOISEUL. Letter signed (claw) to M. de Franqueville d'Abancourt. 2 ½ pp. in-folio. Versailles, October 2, 1765. Important document on the Abbey of the Guillemins of Walincourt (formerly called priory of Val Notre-Dame). [In 1765, the religious were only 12 and the king forbade them to receive novices; they asked Louis XV for authorization to add novices in order to assure the hospitality and the help of the poor.] In this letter, the Duke of Choiseul explained the situation and the requests of the priory and asked Franqueville d'Abancourt to conduct an investigation [which finally led the king to refuse their request]. "This monastery is a member of a congregation of non-reformed Benedictines, known as Guillelmains, and most of the houses of this congregation are located in foreign countries. The disturbances which have been introduced either in the general administration of the body, or in the particular regime of the houses, gave rise last year to the Religious of Walincourt to present a request to the Archbishop of Cambray to ask him to admit them under his jurisdiction [...]. These facts having been brought before the eyes of the King, it seemed to him that if the event which ended them could give the monastery of Walincourt an appearance of tranquility for a few moments, it left the source of the evil to remain in its entirety, since, according to the admission of the religious themselves, the spiritual and temporal aspects of this monastery are in a bad position, and the abuses there are of ancient origin [...]".
