Charles DUFOUR (Veytaux 1827-1902), Swiss astronomer and scientist, author of works on the scintillation of stars. 2 autograph letters signed to the astronomer Ernest Mouchez. 7 pp. in-8. Morges (Switzerland), July-September 1889. Discussion on the explanations of the waterspout observed on the lake of Geneva; he refutes his explanation of whirlwind and explains himself. "The waterspout of August 19 covered more than 6 kilometers, and its height of 106 meters makes it very different from the ordinary appearance of whirlwinds. Moreover, the crews of our steamships who have seen waterspouts at sea say that those of Lake Geneva have the same appearance, only they are smaller [...]". He sends him the report of a cyclone which recently ravaged the forests of the commune of Jougne, asking him to transmit it to the Academy of Sciences. "Meteors of this kind, frequent in America, are certainly much rarer in Europe, all the more reason to pay attention to those that occur. I have endeavored to describe the facts as they occurred, but their knowledge may be of great importance later to judge the value of the theories that could account for them, if at least we manage to find some [...]".
