LIBRARY OF THE KING. Draft of a manuscript... - Lot 656 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
LIBRARY OF THE KING. Draft of a manuscript entitled : " Notice d'un ms nouvellement déposé à la bibliothèque du Roy ". 2 pp. in-4. Middle of the 18th century. Draft in the hand of an unidentified guard of the Bibliothèque du Roy but contemporary of the abbé Sallier, guard of the printed matter from 1726 to 1761 [an erroneous note attributes it to Parquoy]. It is an introduction to the notice in question on a papyrus roll. "I propose to talk to you for a moment about some fragments of an ancient scroll handwritten on bark and of a very old common writing. As it was easy to judge from the simple inspection of the ms that it was the remains of an ancient act in the form prescribed by the Roman laws, Mr. Abbé Sallier invited me to examine it more closely in order to report to the company []". The manuscript was brought in September; it is of a writing "older than any of those which I had yet seen in the immense collection of the Latin mss of the library of the King," without excepting even the famous roll known under the name of Instrumentum plenarioe securitatis". There is attached a manuscript of 4 pp. in-4, contemporary of the manuscript, giving the correspondence of ancient abbreviations with their Latin words.
