Ernest BRETON (1812-1875), painter and archaeologist; he visited Pompeii in 1853-1854 and published the fruit of his discoveries in 1855 in Pompeia. Autograph letter signed to the painter Jean-Jacques Champin (1796-1860), who was his teacher. 4 pp. in-8. Naples, November 13, 1853. Letter to his master during his trip to Pompeii. He tells about his trip, evokes his memories of the great Carthusian monastery, his visit of Turin and its museums, including the Egyptian museum, the Riviera and its sumptuous villas, then Pisa, Florence, Siena, Rome. "We are now settled in Naples where we will spend two months. We are staying in the square of the new castle from where we can see Vesuvius smoking. We have already made several excursions. Pompeii has already had several of our visits. There is a lot to rectify, correct and add to the manuscript of my work drafted in Paris according to my old notes; but now I am in a position to see everything, to measure everything, to verify everything, and I will make sure that my first subscriber will not be too dissatisfied with me [] ".
