François BONVIN (1817-1887), painter of genre... - Lot 425 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
François BONVIN (1817-1887), painter of genre and still life, he painted in an admirable way the modest circles from which he comes. Autograph piece signed 2 pp. in-8. [1884]. Denunciation for immorality. "Among the people who appear at the banquet given for the fiftieth anniversary of the excellent priest Chauvel, of St Germain, is Mr Eugène Seure, the most unworthy, by his morals, to appear in such high religious company. There are people who have no respect for anything, not even for their vices: he was not the only one, moreover, at this ceremony, and if the good priest had any idea of the various sources from which the expenses of the present that was offered to him were drawn, he would certainly find only dregs to drink from the chalice! When, after thirty years, a sinner has not repented, it is not at seventy that he should do so. There is no merit in renouncing to satisfy passions in ashes, and I do not know, on the other hand, that this devout-Tartuffe has renounced bad faith in business, avarice, greed, etc., etc. These considerations are those which always distanced me from the demonstrations whose pride is the motive. Since the comedians have had their entrance into the Church, plays have been received, and on the 7th of November 1884, many people were able to see the characters of Tartuffe and Scapin played.
