ORNE. Set of 15 manuscripts, forming 52 pp. in-folio. 1778-1 - Lot 246
ORNE. Set of 15 manuscripts, forming 52 pp. in-folio. 1778-1789. Some small defects. Nice set of 18th century manuscripts on the forests of Perche and their exploitation (in particular for the forges), forests of Bellême, Mortagne, repairs to be made to the auditorium of the mastery of Mortagne, the cutting of the woods of Comblaville and Varelle, the forest of Gouvern, the concession of the Monteard marsh near Sées, etc. "The forest of the Perche is for the most part arranged in coppice and recépages, and without the wood necessary for the exploitation of the forges which are close to it, these coppices would be unsaleable or given at the lowest price. Among these forges are those of Randonnay, located on the banks of the forest belonging to Sr. Levacher de Perla, banker in Paris. Since he has been the owner, Mr. Levacher has not spent a single year without being awarded all the wood suitable for his factories: he is a consumer to be spared because without him, one would not know what to do with these woods, but what makes him even more commendable is that it is impossible to find a man more loyal in business and more exact in his commitments []. However, for the first time at the auction of the Mortagne mastery for the ordinary of 1789, a blacksmith whose factories are located more than six leagues from the forest of the Perche appeared; and this man, jealous of playing a bad trick on Sr. Levacher, raised the price of the woods to 41,122#, the price at which they were forced to award them to him []".
