François JACQUIER (1711-1788), mathematician... - Lot 46 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
François JACQUIER (1711-1788), mathematician and physicist, Jesuit, member of the Academy of Sciences, he commented on the edition of Newton's Principia. Autograph letter (minute) to Voltaire. 2 pp. in-8. Rome, February 18, 1777. Letter of recommendation and admiration to Voltaire. "It will never be possible for the illustrious hermit of Ferney to live quietly in solitude; I dare to say that he would even fail in the duties of society if he refused to communicate with fellow countrymen who are worthy of seeing and knowing him. An old hermit of Cirey and formerly a confrere of the one in Ferney urges him to grant a few moments to two Frenchmen who surely have spirit and taste, since they desire with the greatest eagerness to speak to the first hermit in the world who has ever existed. I flatter myself, sir, that by virtue of our old friendship and even more by the friendship you have for me, you will not deprive Mrs. Chupin and Baveos of the consolation they wish to have before their return to Paris [] ".
