Alexander von HUMBOLDT (1769-1859), naturalist... - Lot 44 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Alexander von HUMBOLDT (1769-1859), naturalist and explorer. Autograph letter signed to the chemist Ferdinand Hoefer (1811-1878). 1 p. in-8. [June 1841]. Address on the back. After the publication of Hoefer's first work, Éléments de chimie générale, précédés d'un abrégé de l'histoire de la science, et suivie d'un exposé des éléments de chimie organique. "A long time ago, at that antediluvian time when I was working for 5 years in the laboratory of the Ecole Polytechnique which I was living at the time, the interest which was shown in the science which occupies you so usefully, Sir, has not slowed down and it will be a pleasure for me to have the honor of offering you the expression of my deep gratitude. Your work bears the trace of a knowledge of sources to go so far in this country and I have already penetrated in your (?) towards this curious observation on Pliny (p. 563) whose application had escaped me ". He proposes to receive him at the Institute. "I will have the honor to speak with you about the most important part of your work, that of natural classification".
