Alexander von HUMBOLDT (1769-1859), naturalist... - Lot 43 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Alexander von HUMBOLDT (1769-1859), naturalist and explorer. Autograph letter signed to an orientalist. 2 pp. in-8. Berlin, June 2, 1832. He thanks him for his "instructive letter" and agrees to pay the 1200 #. "I am deeply distressed by the state of Mr. Abel Rémusat. It would be a great loss for the sciences and for Asian studies in Paris. I do not have the leisure to provide M. Gide with new additions to the Fragments asiatiques [Humboldt had published, the year before, with Gide, Fragments de géologie et de climatologie asiatiques], which I hope will appear in one volume. I hope, my excellent friend, that you will add a few words about the lakes of Araltoubé []. I see with regret that you are preparing for new excursions in Egypt. You know that we have different opinions about Champollion, but I respect all freedom of discussion []. Mr. Miller is working with Mr. Grimm on a map of Asia in several sheets. It is said that he has taken advantage of Neumann's Chinese maps. I am tormented to communicate your precious maps of Asia, but I firmly resist and it will not be from me that your work will be received []".
