Alexander von HUMBOLDT (1769-1859), naturalist... - Lot 42 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Alexander von HUMBOLDT (1769-1859), naturalist and explorer. Autograph letter signed to a geologist [probably Alexandre Brongniart]. 3 pp. in-16. Undated [1822]. Very beautiful letter on lignites, illustrated with a geological sketch. "Read, my invaluable friend, a notice on the subterranean forests of Russia in the nouv. Bibl. univ. March 1822 p. 174. 174. This has much to do, it seems to me, with your work. Would you have the grace to write me only 6 lines on your lignites for my geological table. I can only devote 6 to 10 lines to it, but I would like to know quite distinctly the place and extent that it occupies, the thickness of the layer of lignites. If you believe that it is older than the chalk, therefore older than the plastic clay with lignite on top of the chalk. Are not your lignites immediately superimposed on the Jura limestone and the oolitic and mamous limestone formations placed between the alpine limestone and the chalk. Don't forget that M. Prevost [the geologist Constant Prevost] also found lignites under the chalk near Caen. He illustrates his point with a geological sketch of the different layers, and asks him where he places his lignites. "I know that your lignites are not so common, but you will judge by analogy.
