Isidore GEOFFROY SAINT-HILAIRE (1805-1861),... - Lot 39 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Isidore GEOFFROY SAINT-HILAIRE (1805-1861), zoologist, member (1833) then president (1856) of the Academy of Sciences. Founder of the Société d'acclimatation. L.A.S. to Lebreton. Paris, March 29, 1838. 3 pp. in-8. Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire lists the most esteemed scientific treatises written by his colleagues: the chemists Jean-Baptiste Dumas (1800-1884), Baron Louis Georges Thenard (1777-1857) and Justus von Liebig (1803-1873), the mathematician Gabriel Lamé (1795-1870), the physicist Claude Pouillet (1790-1868), etc. "The new information that I have taken, always agree to represent the geological manual of Labèche as the best treatise of geology. It is a rather heavy book and not very attractive to read, but it is perfectly up to date with the science []. For chemistry, Mr. Doyère has rightly spoken to you about the Treatises of Thénard and Dumas, as two excellent books each in their own genre []. For physics I am much more embarrassed: the treatises of Pouillet and Lamé each have their supporters []". He leans towards Pouillet and adds "there is a much shorter treatise on physics of which the most competent judges, M. Dulong among others and M. de Savart, give the highest praise: it is that of Person which appeared a year and a half ago. It seemed to me, as for me, very incomplete".
