Pierre FLOURENS (1794-1867), biologist, father... - Lot 33 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Pierre FLOURENS (1794-1867), biologist, father of experimental neuroscience, he was Cuvier's substitute at the Museum of Natural History, which he later directed. Set of 3 documents: - L.A.S. addressed to the printer Jules Claye. S.l., April 7, 1852. 1 page ¼ in-8. Interesting letter concerning the edition of Garnier frères of the complete works of Buffon, in 12 volumes established by Flourens (1853). Flourens gives his directives for the edition: "[] I send you back a sheet and a half, corrected by me with attention. I had asked that the punctuation of Buffon be restored. They did not do it; I had to do it. The punctuation of Furne is too arbitrary. This work took me a lot of time. I also see that, in the following sheets, Buffon's notes, omitted by Furne, have not been restored, even though I had asked for it. I will restore them. You had a very happy idea when you invited the publishers to provide us with a copy of the good edition; and, as I wished, we should have started only with this copy. That would have saved us a lot of trouble. Perhaps it would be better (no matter how much more trouble it would give me) to send me back the copy of the Furne edition, on which I have put my notes; I would carry them, before going any further, on the copy of the Buffon edition. It is a proposal that I leave to you to judge [] ". Provenance : former collection of autographs of Léon Muller, employee of the Charavay company. - 2 entrance tickets for the Museum of Natural History, for four people each, with autograph signatures of Flourens in brown ink. Gallery of Zoology - Gallery of Mineralogy - Gallery of Botany - School of Botany". 6,8 x 9,7 cm. The second one, also engraved on wood, on blue paper, bears the title " Muséum d'Histoire naturelle - Serres neuves et Orangerie ". 12,5 x 16,2 cm.
