Cossigny thanks Carnot after his nomination as correspondent of the Institute (he had been elected correspondent of the Academy of Sciences as early as 1774). "It [the class of the Institute] has undoubtedly wanted to reward the zeal that I have always shown for the progress of science and the perfection of the arts. The gratitude with which I am imbued can only maintain the same feeling in me, or rather give it more strength and more activity [] ".
