Charles-François BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRÉ (1766-1854),... - Lot 6 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Charles-François BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRÉ (1766-1854), hydrographer and cartographer, he participated in the d'Entrecasteaux expedition in search of La Pérouse; he is considered the father of modern hydrography. Manuscript with autograph corrections and additions. 3 pp. ¼ in-4. Manuscript relating to the means of measuring large angles and various inventions. "M. Fayolle had the happy idea, in 1817, of adding to his circle a third alidade carrying a large mirror whose movement is made above the ordinary large mirror and he succeeds by this means in being able to measure simultaneously the two angles comprised between three terrestrial objects []. Mr. Daussy found a few years later a very simple way to measure the large angles. This means consists in placing a small auxiliary mirror on the alidade which carries the telescope and the small mirror of the reflection circle and to place it so that it makes a constant angle with the small ordinary mirror []". He specifies that this instrument can also be used to measure the distances from the moon to the sun and stars.
