Joseph-Marie AMIOT (1718-1793), Jesuit and... - Lot 3 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Joseph-Marie AMIOT (1718-1793), Jesuit and astronomer, missionary in China from 1750 to his death; he was one of the very last survivors of the Jesuit Mission in China. Autograph manuscript, 1 p. in-4, on China paper (small chips). Peking (China), 1786. Shipment of seeds from the gardens of the Emperor of China. "List of seeds sent to Monseigneur de Bertin minister of state by his very humble servant Amiot missionary in Peking. 1786 ". Amiot lists 22 Chinese plants ("n°1. Hiang-joung. 2. Ngai-kang []") and adds: "I did not dare to give French names to all these seeds. I am sending the list as it was given by the eunuch who has inspection over the Emperor's gardens. It is unfortunate that most of the plants, trees etc. that decorate the gardens of His Majesty come only from cuttings. Extremely rare manuscript.
