LALLEMAND Jean - Baptiste Dijon 1716 - Paris 1803 1 - View of the surroundings of Frascati A philosopher talks with his disciples in the middle of ancient ruins at the foot of a sarcophagus with lion heads and claws. Oil on canvas (a few gaps on the lower frame in particular) On the reverse of the stretcher an old inventory number in black ink 106. H. 64 - L. 49 cm Related to the original model of the engraving in counterpart made by David Née under the title Vue des environs de Frascati, with the indication J. B Lallemand pinx, and taken from the Cabinet de Monsieur l'Abbé Copelle (Musée des Beaux - Arts d'Orléans. Mona Lisa database. Engraving N° 2008.0.1706). The same sarcophagus with the feet of lions, leaning on an identical stele decorated with two figures, is found in another composition of J. B. Lallemand preserved in the museum of the Beaux - Arts of Bordeaux (47 X 37 cm) Figures contemplating a tomb (former collection of the marquis of La Caze). 2 - Young girls at the fountain A soldier at rest points to a marble sculpture of a Roman empress placed in front of a fountain under a parasol pine. Oil on canvas of origin (some gaps on the portour and small restorations in the upper right, notably) H. 64 - L. 49 cm Two other compositions of similar dimensions (61 x 48,5 cm) associating Roman ruins with figures meditating on their degradation belong to the museum of Caen (Cf. Jean - Pierre Le Goff, Deux pendant de Jean - Baptiste Lallemand : donnent - ils à voir le temps qui fuit en perspective et la vanité qui tombe en ruine ?
