TURINESE SCHOOL Second half of the XVIIth... - Lot 229 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
TURINESE SCHOOL Second half of the XVIIth century Portrait of a knight of the Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunciation. He is wearing a long brown wig and a studded cuirass with a gold chain necklace around his neck, ending with the Annunciation medallion and the motto FERT on his collar. Oil on canvas of oval shape (lining). H.71,5 - L.58,5cm. On the back of the frame, an old handwritten label, damaged and fragmentary, giving indications on the model and specifying: Killed at the battle of Marsaille ... 1693. Wooden frame and gilded stucco with oak leaves and acorns (accidents). Designated at the time of its creation by Count Amédée VI of Savoy, in 1362, under the name of the Order of the Collar, this one becomes, in 1581, under the authority of Charles III of Savoy the Supreme Order of the Very Holy Annunciation, dedicated to the Virgin. The motto FERT, added by Amedee VII, which can be read on the gold chain worn around the neck of the knight evokes the bravery shown by the knights during the defense of Rhodes against the Turks Fortitudo Eius Rhodium Tenuit. The indication still legible on the handwritten label on the reverse of the frame refers to the battle of La Marsaille or Marsaglia in Piedmont, opposing on October 4, 1693 the French armies commanded by Marshal de Catinat to that of Prince Victor - Amedeo II of Savoy during the war of the League of Augsburg.
