PAS-DE-CALAIS. Jean-René ASSELINE (1742-1813), last bishop of Boulogne. 2 L.A.S. to Champion de Cicé, 3 pp. in-4. Anholt, August 5 - 12, 1794. Letters from exile after his installation in Germany. "I admire, as you do, the conduct of divine providence which, in the conjecture of this new dispersion more unfortunate than all those which preceded it, still spares so many resources to the French clergy forced to flee so far from persecution []. Our position is undoubtedly distressing, unexpected setbacks are making it more and more difficult, and we are less than ever aware of the end of our troubles []. You make me regret very much not having settled in Réés: but it is according to the information that I had been able to obtain in Maestricht where I had taken refuge at first, while leaving Brussels, that I formed the project to seek asyle here [] ". He was able to find the bishop of Clermont and thanks to Canon Weyermaan, some French nuns of his diocese were able to find refuge in the monastery of Réés. A second letter is devoted to his conferences made in Brussels: project of ordinance concerning the intruded or sworn clergymen, another concerning "the expiation of the attacks committed against the sacred person of the King and that of the Queen []".
