Pierre-Victor MALOUËT (1740/1814), colonist of Saint-Domingu - Lot 303
Pierre-Victor MALOUËT (1740/1814), colonist of Saint-Domingue, constituent, signatory of the Whitehall treaty between the great French sugar planters and England; he was forced into exile after August 10. 2 L.A.S. to Champion de Cicé, 7 pp. in-4. London, April 23, 1798 and n.d. On a threat of treason by the colonists after the Treaty of Whitehall and the signing of the armistice of March 30, 1798 in Saint-Domingue allowing the withdrawal of the English army. "Since I have had the honor of seeing you, several people have spoken to me as you did about the unfortunate outcome of a criminal trial between Frenchmen for intercepting libel letters and defamation. I gave them the same answer and I am so much in agreement with them about the disastrous consequences and the seriousness of the scandal which will result from it, that I would reproach myself for not having been in a position to see that I have done everything possible to avoid such a scandal []. Mr. Reynier will therefore have to prove by a particular intercepted letter which proves nothing that I have betrayed the colonists, that I have ruined their business, he will have as proof his slander []. But the most serious facts are reduced to these, have I served or betrayed the colonists, have I well or badly conceived and served the interests of the colony, and the most imposing testimonies are incontestably in my favor [] ". 2 L.A.S. of Regnier to Champion de Cicé, relative to this affair (3 pp. in-4, April 1798) + the draft of another one also relative to this affair are joined.
