INDRE-ET-LOIRE. Joachim François Mamert de CONZIÉ (1738-1795 - Lot 299
INDRE-ET-LOIRE. Joachim François Mamert de CONZIÉ (1738-1795), archbishop of Tours (from 1775 to 1795). L.S. to Jérôme Champion de Cicé (archbishop of Bordeaux) and to his brother Jean-Baptiste Marie Champion de Cicé (last bishop of Auxerre). 2 pp. in-4. Düsseldorf, May 25, 1793, small erasure in the margin. He is vehemently opposed to the project, submitted to the sovereign pontiff, of indulgence and reconciliation with the sworn priests, that is to say "the parish priests who took the oath and adhered to the intruder bishop only by fear, by weakness or by interest. Those of our confreres who are in Dusseldorf, several of whom had attended the Brussels conferences, and those who have recently left us, believe, as do I, that this indulgence would be a scandal for the Church; that it would become an inexhaustible source of disorder in the parishes to which such pastors would be left; that it would plunge the faithful and the lords of these parishes into the most just and bitter affliction []". He asks for the intervention of the Cardinal of Bernis in this matter. "I hope that you will be willing to inform me of the name, the residence and the feelings of the bishops to whom you have sent our memoirs. I do not wish at least to know the judgment which you will make [] ".
