GIRONDE. 2 autograph letters (unsigned), addressed to Mgr Ch - Lot 297
GIRONDE. 2 autograph letters (unsigned), addressed to Mgr Champion de Cicé, archbishop of Bordeaux. 8 pp. in-4. Bordeaux, "the 3rd of the year" and 29 Nov. 1800. Two long and very interesting letters, probably written by his vicar general in Bordeaux, informing him of the situation of the Bordeaux clergy at the time of the Concordat. "But I cannot express to you how much I fear that it will not have the good effects that you expected. There are, I presume at least, several priests who are disposed to make the move, or who will dispose themselves according to your letter, but there are also a great number of them, and of this number are almost all those who work the most, who enjoy the most public confidence, and most of your diocesans who, in spite of being informed of your way of thinking, are turned away from following it either by the repugnance they have for this act, or even more by the various writings which come from abroad and which flood France []. In such a state of affairs, I mean, having no hope of obtaining a suitable reunion, foreseeing on the contrary only a most sensitive dissidence, I believe that after what you have always testified to me, Your Excellency, that it is wise to defer the publication of your letter []. You can rest assured, Your Excellency, that you are perfectly at ease about the draft petition of Messrs. de Paris. I have treated it as it deserved to be treated and have kept it so secret that nothing has transpired. How one is prone to be blinded when one wants things to be done to excess! [] ". He recounts the situation in the different dioceses, in Poitiers where "they do not recognize your authority", Sarlat, Condom, Saintes, Auch, etc. "The plague is always terrible and it is not always easy to find a solution. "The plague is still wreaking terrible havoc in Spain; we have lost some of our priests there, among them L. Nauvile. L. Freneau sindic of St. Raphael was affected by it, I don't know if he got out of it. Communication with Spain is interrupted at this moment [] ".
